With a great history, Serbia fits in as an indispensable building block in pan-European development. But the drifting apart of Yugoslav unity has given the country an aloof and special position that has driven it into isolation beyond the borders of the European Union. Hardly any tour operators have Serbian destinations on their programmes. The situation is different in Montenegro, which recently abandoned its ties with neighbouring Serbia in favour of EU membership. The lecture portrays the cultural present of two states, which are emerging from the same roots into a different future.
