The first hydrogen fuel cell bus with technology produced in Portugal began operating last 13/08 . The country's first hydrogen-powered public transport vehicle, 100% made in Portugal. A pioneer in sustainable mobility, Cascais has been investing, increasingly, in environmentally friendly means of public transport. With these new buses, the municipality takes another step towards the decarbonization of society and the economy, ensuring increased safety and social cohesion and reducing the ecological footprint.
The hydrogen used to fuel these vehicles will be entirely produced in Cascais through the electrolysis process that will be powered by electricity from renewable sources, allowing the production of at least 350 kg of green hydrogen per day, which will be compressed and stored to later be transferred to the vehicles, fueling them. The hydrogen cell allows for greater efficiency and autonomy when compared to conventional electric vehicles, also ensuring 0 greenhouse gas emissions.
Cascais thus remains aligned with national energy policies in force and with the goals of the European Union for the promotion and implementation in reducing the environmental impacts of urban mobility. We want the municipality to continue to follow a progressively more sustainable, rational, efficient and accessible path, promoting the attractiveness of public transport in order to contribute to the decarbonization of the transport sector and the reduction of air pollution, ensuring the quality of life of inhabitants and visitors.
