The +0.5 Future of the Mediterranean Climate Change Workshop, organized by Muratpa?a Municipality, has ended. On the first day of the workshop held on 12-13 November, seabed cleaning was carried out with the participation of 50 divers in the historical Kaleiçi Yacht Harbor. On the second day, which started with the opening speech of Mayor Ümit Uysal, scientific sessions were held at Türkan ?oray Cultural Center.
After the sessions, the final declaration of the +0.5 Future of the Mediterranean Climate Change Workshop was announced. The declaration was made by Akdeniz University Faculty of Engineering Department of Environmental Engineering Faculty Member and workshop scientific sessions advisor Prof. Dr. Gokhan Civelekoglu studied. In the 12-item declaration, it was underlined that the first thing to be done to reduce the negative effects of climate change is to reduce carbon emissions.
Accordingly, it was stated that it is imperative to solve environmental problems with innovative projects. Attention was drawn to the dissemination of environmentally friendly production methods, the use of environmental technologies and the necessity of investing in these matters. Underlining that a healthy environment is the fundamental right to life, the declaration underlined, “It is not possible to carry out the adaptation process to climate change unilaterally. Therefore, no one should be left behind in the process. We should not be afraid to give and receive the right to speak.
In the declaration, which underlined the need to reduce water loss and leakage rates in the city water network system and to end illegal drilling practices, it was also stated that local governments should be party to international conventions in order to reduce microplastic pollution in the Mediterranean. Emphasizing the elimination of polluting pressures for the protection of the sea and its beaches, it was stated that "Discharge of domestic and industrial wastewater into the sea by only pre-treatment should be stopped immediately".
It was stated in the final declaration that the unconscious use of pesticides and fertilizers in agricultural production should be abandoned, and that plant species that consume less water should be used in the urban landscape. The final declaration, which clearly states that wetlands should not be opened to urbanization, ended with the following call:
“It should not be forgotten that a life without water is not possible. We are the source and solution of the problem. As Muratpa?a Municipality, we invite all institutions, organizations and sectors to create and implement a climate change action plan without wasting time, in line with the final declaration of the "Climate Change Workshop for the Future of the Mediterranean".
